The Mitten {Jan Brett}

Something I've been thinking about doing is using a great story and really building on it throughout the week.  I decided to try that this week with The Mitten by Jan Brett.

Using the mitten from Jan Brett's website, I adjusted the size to create a mitten that "stretches" as each new animal climbs inside.  Click on the animals below to print them from her website.  I made 2 sets of mittens to accommodate the different levels of learners.  The first set has a sentence structure already in place and the second set is blank for students to write in their own sentence.  Click the mitten for a free copy!

I did this as a whole group activity but it certainly would've been easier in small groups.  First, we numbered the mittens in hopes that it would aid in sequencing.  That worked for most kids.

Then they colored and cut out the animals to glue onto each mitten.

Then the students either filled in the animal names or wrote their own sentences to retell the story.  Some students wrote using ordinal numbers {The owl was fourth.} others wrote narrative sentences {The rabbit had big feet but he was cozy.} while others followed a pattern {The bear crawled in the mitten.  The mouse crawled in the mitten.}  I gave them various examples but let them decide what to write on their own.

To display them, I gave the kids 2 options.  Some were stapled together to create a flip book.

Others were strung on yarn and hung across the window.  {forgive the dark picture.  We get the afternoon sun and it was so bright!!}

For writing we used a cute adjective activity from {The First Grade Parade}.  Since I forgot to ask students to bring in mittens I just diecut white ones and let the kids decorate them.  Worked just as well!

It appears I forgot to take a picture, but for math we graphed our favorite character and used a tally sheet from {Swamp Frog First Graders} to show another way to count and represent the data.

I had a great time using the book all week and I think my kids did, too.  We also talked about it as we learned about staying warm with penguins and polar bears.  Coming next!  ;)

It was just one of {those} days.

Either I was the greatest, most challenging teacher ever and my kids just weren't ready for the level of rigor I threw at them -OR- I lacked both patience and classroom management today.  Or maybe I was speaking Chinese?

Whatever the reason, today was one of those days.  If I said stand up, they sat down.  If I said count the blocks, they built a tower.  If I said write this word, they drew a mural.  And I felt like I tried everything to get them back on track.  The "if this is what happens when I let you measure with gummy worms then I guess we'll just go back to doing boring work" guilt trip.  {nothing}  The "I love how so-and-so is sitting and being a good listener.  Here's an M&M" positive reinforcement modeling.  {nada}  Even the "instead of reading a story today, everyone who does a good job of following directions and clipping up can have a dance party" bribe.  {zip}

By the time I got to my Social Studies lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King at the end of the day, I had all but given up.  We were talking about peace and how to get along with everyone.  My examples were not arguing, listening, using kind words and sharing things at school.  {Hmmm...wherever did I get these examples because they aren't familiar at all!}  As much as I would love to say that the peace lightbulb went off and we all ended the day holding hands and singing kum by yah, that wasn't so much the case.

What's that sign going around on Pinterest?

Well, my day wasn't even over at dismissal {PTA function night!} but when I did finally get home I found a loving husband, precious puppy and clean kitchen.  I love my kids and my job and even if it takes me stepping out of the situation and taking a few deep breaths, I understand that we all have off days.  Tomorrow is a new one with new possibilities for all of us.

{And when I get to heaven I'm going to ask God...were the full moons really necessary?!}

Happy Friday!!  :)

oh the phone calls I'm going to get...

Every year I watch "March of the Penguins" because it is so so so good.  To be honest when my dad gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago I was like "grrrrreat....thanks."  But I watch it in my classroom EVERY year and my kids always love it.  I'm constantly going "Shhh!  Listen!  You're gonna miss it!" because they get so excited to see real, actual penguins in their real, actual habitat that they can't just sit there and watch without asking questions.  If you don't have it in your collection, go rent it.  Spread out over a few days it doesn't take up that much time.

Plus I have some things your kids can be doing while it's on.  ;)  I'm working on a new penguin writing/craft project now that I'll have finished by the end of the week but if you just can't wait, you can see my post on penguins from last year {here}.

So we started our penguin unit today and I once again gave my kids a circle map to record information they hear while we're watching the video.  {This time the circle map will be part of the penguin...stay tuned!!}  I wrote "penguins" on the board, started the video and was going about my business making commentary with the film and watching to see who was actually writing down facts.

And then...I saw it.  Oh the phone calls I'm going to get when it hangs in the hall.

The topic we learned about today apparently was:

I literally laughed out loud and couldn't help myself.  "Wow!  You're doing such a great job!" was my only recovery.  Then I took a picture of it and texted it to my mom and sister with the title "In case you need to study up."  Allison, also a teacher, got it immediately.  Mom, on the other hand, wasn't so sure. "I don't get it.  And why do I need to study that?"  Oh, mother...

I was definitely in need of a laugh today and this student {while he still struggles to copy!} was able to give me that gift.

Now to fix it before we complete his project...

when cyber worlds collide!

I realized something about myself today and had to laugh.  I very well may feel connected to more of you that I've never met than some of the people I see in my day to day life!  But you and I...we really have the perfect relationship.  Think about it.  We share ideas to help each other but never get mad that someone has taken your glory because if they get recognized for "their" awesome idea by another staff member, the idea-maker isn't there across the hall fuming...she's likely in a different state and wouldn't even know!  We find connections and build on common interests when we constantly repin each other's ideas but don't have to get jealous when someone else plans the same activity for the same day.  And we can give each other encouragement and "good job you!"s without ever having to worry about having arguments or miscommunications. While I'm not saying that we should all hermit-up and stop having relationships with the outside world, I am thankful for you "friends" and your willingness to share.

I was given the Versatile Blogger award by Vickie over at Mrs. Plant's Press.  When I went to her blog I was surprised that I hadn't been there before.  After all, I knew her name and recognized her {beautiful wedding} picture.  So if I wasn't already a follower of her blog, how in the world did I know her?!  Oh.  Wait.  Pinterest!  My cyber-worlds had collided.  :)  I am so happy to accept the award from her and hope you'll stop by to pick up some good ideas on her blog or her Pinterest boards...or both!

The Versatile Blogger Award Rules:
*Link back to the person who nominated you.
*Share 7 things about yourself.
*Pass the award to 12 new deserving bloggers.
{seven things about me}

{1} I don't believe in New Year's resolutions because giving something the title of a resolution seems to just doom it from happening.  But I do believe in making changes to be better and the one I'm currently working on is to think less of myself and more of others, including not getting caught up in drama or gossip {how hard is THAT when you work with 99% women?!}.  Ask me in March and let's see how I'm doing...  ;)

{2} I love using music, videos, games, etc in my classroom.  Do you follow Harry Kindergarten on YouTube?!  The SmartBoard is so much better than crowding 20 students around one computer monitor!

{3} I truly love The Cosby Show and will have to take a day off when Mr. Cosby is no longer with us.  I constantly use show phrases in my day-to-day conversations and people who don't know me probably think I'm nuts.  Who it is?!...I could never eat a duck face....Bacon Burger Dog!

{4} While I'm on the topic of videos that make me laugh, let's just take it one step further and really embarrass myself.  I can not watch this video without laughing.  And I've seen it multiple times.

{5} And in case that's not juvenile enough, New Girl is my new favorite show and here's why.  {maybe do not watch this if you have kids in the room.  P-word!}  Cracks me up.

{6} I can obviously laugh at myself!  I'm a pretty open book {much to the chagrin of my mother} and even talk about personal issues because I feel like any struggle I've been through was allowed by God so I can use it to help someone else.

{7} I do not cook unless we're having a party but I love Chopped, Iron Chef, Man vs. Food and Top Chef!  I even comment on their dishes and what they should do...but could never do it myself!

{12 blogs you should follow}

Inspired by my earlier realization, I'm choosing to give this award to people I've recently found via their great pinning taste in hopes of further connecting with them through blogland!

snow. {in the 70's}

No, I'm having a disco fever moment. That would be today's actual forecast. 70 degrees. On January 7th. I can hear you up north, rubbing your mittens together and wishing it would stay in the lower 50's so you could go out in shorts. I've been there! I grew up in Michigan. And while I have to admit that I {sometimes, maybe, a little bit} miss seeing snow, this gorgeous weather is one of the things I love most about the south. Then again, I did have to move from the hammock to the picnic table to type better. I know...so annoying right?!   ;)

Well today, wherever you are, you can have the best of both worlds. I came across a new blog {Golden Gang Kindergarten} where Deanna created a snowball fight for her Floridian kids to practice number combinations of 10 while also enjoying some flurry fun.  Complete with recording sheet.  Go snag her game and give her another follower.  I have a feeling we'll be wanting to hear more from her!

Ok, so, I guess that only helps the teachers in the south get snow. If you're looking for some sun and warmth up north, celebrate Rod Stewart's birthday Monday by listening to Last Summer and have your students write about what they did last summer!   No?  Then you can at least go find a place with good sangria.  ;)

save, save as fast you can. here are some ideas for your {gingerbread man}

With everything else I have to teach at Christmas, I never have time to really do the gingerbread man justice.  So the last couple years I decided to save it for after Christmas break.  January's always a slow start anyway, so why not have something fun to come back to?

I like to read multiple gingerbread man stories because my class is always split {as is true with any classic story}: some kids have never heard it and of the ones who have, the versions are never the same.  So I read whatever I gather from my teammates.  :)  Here are some of the recurring players:

After reading The Gingerbread Man, we completed a sequencing activity to retell the characters the gingerbread man ran away from.  I'd say it's a Flow Map but since I neglected to add the arrows between the boxes, I'm not sure if it counts. Then in the space at the bottom the students wrote about the ending.

What's the point in reading about gingerbread men if you're not going to make one, right?!  I've used all kids of various candies in the past {usually whatever was left over from parties} but it never ceases to amaze me how quickly it falls off.  Or is picked off...to be eaten...by passerbys in the hallway...no matter how many times the "this candy has glue on it and will make you puke" speech is given.  {bleh}  And then it hit me.  Jello!

I still used mini M&Ms for the eyes, sprinkles for the mouths & lifesavers for the candy buttons but decided Jello would stick much better than pipe cleaners, twizzlers, smarties or any other variety of candy that I've tried to add in the past.  {Also, I'm out of glitter glue, which is a major bummer and would've solved this problem.}  If you haven't ever sprinkled Jello powder on wet Elmer's glue let me tell you, it's like magic!  Not only does the glue change to the color of the Jello but it smells {mmmm} delicious.

Was the table a horrible mess after completing this project?  You betcha.  But if you work with anyone under of the age of 5 {or 15 if you're a super great educator} you have to be okay with a little mess.  It's building an experience!  :)
After the glue dried and I shook off the excess candy, I hung them in the hall with our own gingerbread man stories.  Abby at {Babbling Abby} has a great gingerbread outline that we used to write descriptive words as an organizer.  Once I decided to hang it all out in the hallway on our school regulated "Bear Boards" though, I realized I didn't have room for the whole sheet and had to cut it down.  If you want the whole printable, you can get it {here}.
They used their detail words to write their own gingerbread stories.  Lower level students used the starter "My gingerbread boy/girl is _____" while my stronger writers were challenged to write a story about their gingerbread person coming to life.  One was an actor who played a princess in a play while another was a gingerbread cowboy who rode a gingerbread horse!

Here's my gingerbread man flow map for your use if you haven't read them yet this year.  I made the form nice and generic in case your version doesn't have 6 characters for the cookies to run away from.
{You could always use the old lady baking the cookie in the first box to take up space if needed or if you can tell the entire story in 6 boxes, your kids can write about their favorite part - or what the gingerbread man should've done instead - on the line at the bottom.  Just some ideas!!}  Happy creating!

New Year's resolutions

Happy 2012!  I rang in the new year with my parents, good friends, some bubbly, a super hyped up puppy and a sick husband.  :(  He hung in there until the ball dropped and was immediately in bed afterward.  I can't believe it but we didn't take any pictures.  Not one!

I'm back to school tomorrow even though it appears the rest of the world is off for NYE {or is it New Year's day?  I'm never really sure} and put off planning for tomorrow until the last second.  I didn't even clean up the kitchen from last night until 2pm and am still in my pajamas, yes at 9:18pm.  At least I was a good hostess last night.  That's all that counts, right?!  ;)

If you're looking for something fun to add when you go back to school in between reviewing rules, reviewing procedures, practicing procedures and reviewing rules again, I will save you time in your last few minutes of break.  There are 3 super fab ideas right here.  The first one is from yours truly to help your little ones figure out how to write a resolution and what that means.  No, you can't make a resolution to tie your shoes if you already know how to do it!
Anna Brantley {ever a favorite} also has some fun ideas on her blog.  I especially love the Bubble Map for making predictions of things that will happen in the new year.  Will someone get a new brother or sister?  What will they learn to do?  How many teeth will fall out?  I'm getting excited thinking about the possibilities of a new year just looking at it!
And Cara Carroll {The First Grade Parade} has an entire unit up for grabs.  Telling time, making words...lots of good stuff.  Some of it is a little high for my kinders but I'm definitely using her Making Words activity in a literacy center.  So great!
Happy New Year friends!  Here's to being a more loving, more patient wife, sister, daughter, teacher, friend & overall blessing in other people's lives in 2012!
