It's a call and response storyline that follows each "Mama, I don't like my ____" with the reassurance from her mom that "Your ____ is perfect for..." It's a sweet, encouraging story for anyone who has decided to actively teach body confidence to their children, daughters specifically.<br />

At school, this would be a great addition to the classroom library. It may not be appropriate for a read-aloud in the younger grades - only because not all little girls have had these questionable thoughts yet. I would hate to put that terminology in their mouths if they are anything like my daughter who can look like she survived a whirlwind, look in the mirror and say, "Mommy! I'm not cute! I'm beautiful!" I mean, right?! That is confidence I don't need to touch until it wavers. Unfortunately I know that some little girls start putting unfair amounts of comparison and self-worth on their appearance at an early age and this would be a great resource to be able to pull if a situation came up.<br />
<br />
For an older classroom, even middle or high school students, I would totally use this as a read-aloud. Big kids like picture books, too, they just never have the chance to read them! It would be a great discussion starter for students to be able to encourage each other in the strengths they see in their classmates or a wonderful springboard into an assignment on self-reflection. I would also totally use this for a G<a href="https://www.girlsontherun.org/" target="_blank">irls on the Run</a> lesson or in any type of counseling capacity.<br />

The best part about this project is that it's <a href="https://www.catskillpublishing.com/author" target="_blank">Kimberly's</a> story. Not only did she come through anxiety, depression and attempted suicide but she wrote this story to empower her two daughters and the next generation of girls. She's giving back 5% of the book profits to organizations that also support children, help them gain confidence and provide other resources as needed. If you don't have kids or a classroom of your own, you can purchase one through her website and have it <a href="https://www.catskillpublishing.com/product-page/donate-just-perfect-paperback" target="_blank">donated</a> to a charity that can use it as a resource. How great is that?!<br />

Also, Disney Princesses. That's right. I have a 3 year old daughter, what else did you think we talked about around here all day?!<br />

"For every girl who dreams big, there's a princess to show her it's possible." I love this whole angle. Our littlest girls won't understand some of the heavier hitting concepts. But if my 3 year old can use Mulan's bravery as inspiration to keep trying during swimming lessons when she's terrified to put her face in the water, who are we to tell Disney that this is silly? This is genius!<br />
<br />
Let's use whatever our kids know, what's age appropriate and what makes sense in their worlds. Empower them. Give them examples. Read them books. Teach them lessons. Whatever will work for your littles...use it. What other resources do you love?!<br />

And I'm recovering perfectionist who has fallen off the wagon. I can not even admit to you how long I have been working on these packets. Let's just say, it was back in the good old days when Facebook was for posting pictures of your food and your vacation.<br />
<br />
You guys, this is what I do. And also, what I don't do. If I can't do something exceptionally well or 200% accurate or absolutely done to the nines, I just don't do it at all. That's why my closet floor very well may have fallen through the foundation from the weight of the clothes piled atop it but I wouldn't know because there are that. many. clothes. on top of the hole. Sure, a normal person would hang up a few things a day when there was a spare minute. Me? Nope. If I don't have time for a reorg, there's no point in picking up anything. Because that makes COMPLETE AND TOTAL SENSE.<br />
<br />
I know. I'm a pyscho.<br />
<br />
So these packs may not be complete. In fact, I'm kind of hoping they aren't so you can grab them at the sale price and then get updates when the collective everyone tells me what is missing. That's your catch for getting it on sale, ok? You have to tell me what is missing.<br />
<br />
This series was created for those silly little mix-ups that need to be corrected. Reversals are so many times just habit and while yes, they are also often developmental, it doesn't mean we can't practice doing things the right way, amiright?!<br />
<br />
The first pack is for common <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-Reversals-No-More-Silly-Mistakes-3031381" target="_blank">letter reversals</a>. Students will identify each letter and circle them according to the color code. Then they fill in the missing letter to complete a label and color in the picture. Fun!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-Reversals-No-More-Silly-Mistakes-3031381" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgJ7LNLcMP6vTnCnr9lCs42l5BbXdJX7BSXkAbcYdLrPZJnW8B6o0qkk5Jgg13pES6lP5IjGTpajHp8h0mpbtQW9-f5eUvT0VUYZQqKwQ1s-oS0pFoDjiYMwckSkXUM8sbQ8fkRuqDml5/s320/Screen+Shot+2017-02-09+at+3.18.30+PM.png" width="247" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0l3BslUa_ZaieqnavlhJ8Lci1Z-DmA6BgE9waw6mbat0gOMoarmjaDLxry0scBsmne53g1DkGLfhyphenhyphenHoKPByQsP_rfKwrhf6HqwFKXT04vGQVam-s2zgACdagTv3pZob9q2SyAkLG2gYE/s1600/Screen+Shot+2017-02-23+at+10.24.12+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0l3BslUa_ZaieqnavlhJ8Lci1Z-DmA6BgE9waw6mbat0gOMoarmjaDLxry0scBsmne53g1DkGLfhyphenhyphenHoKPByQsP_rfKwrhf6HqwFKXT04vGQVam-s2zgACdagTv3pZob9q2SyAkLG2gYE/s320/Screen+Shot+2017-02-23+at+10.24.12+PM.png" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
The next pack is for common <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spelling-Pattern-substitutions-No-More-Silly-Mistakes-3031395" target="_blank">spelling pattern</a> errors I saw in my classroom. For example, when learning the /ar/ sound, many of them would use that any time there was an <i>a</i> <b>or</b> <i>r</i> in the word, even if they weren't paired correctly {ex: rake became "ark"}. Students will highlight words with the spelling pattern you're practicing then write 6 words that contain the pattern. They finish by choosing one of their words to write in a sentence.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Yes, some of them will copy words from the box. Others will be able to come up with their own. That's a great quick assessment to see who can apply it to other words. I also decided to accept<br />
nonsense words when I had trouble coming up with 6 for some of them!<br />

<br />
The last pack is for commonly mixed-up <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sight-Word-mix-ups-No-More-Silly-Mistakes-3031410" target="_blank">sight words</a>. If my students consistently read <i>saw</i> for <i>was</i>, they got a practice sheet. If they wrote <i>my</i> every time they meant <i>me</i>...practice sheet. Practice doesn't always mean homework, either! I'm not a paper pusher. These can be added to reading folders, independent practice literacy centers, morning work, a quick writing warm-up, etc. Just like in the letter packets, students will identify words and circle them according to the color code. Then they choose the appropriate word to accurately complete the sentence and illustrate what it says.<br />
<br />
It's also available in a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/No-More-Silly-Mistakes-BUNDLEletter-reversals-spelling-patterns-sight-words-3031440" target="_blank">bundle</a> so you can save if you need to "differentiate your instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners." Can you tell I've been doing this a while? ;)<br />
<br />
That's it! Pin away for later or print for morning work tomorrow but grab it now while it's at a discounted price. Then email me whatever's missing. That's what you agree to with your purchase!<br />

I love summer. Time for projects of all kinds - fixing things, painting things, organizing ALL the things. I finally have time to go buy the supplies I need or get the missing pieces for all of my half done {or only imagined thus far} projects. I love it! I feel like a free woman.<br />
<br />
My husband, not so much.<br />
<br />
This is basically me in July when I realize I've spent more in the past 3 weeks than in the past 5 months...minus school supplies.<br />

When <a href="http://www.thepencilgrip.com/" target="_blank">The Pencil Grip, Inc.</a> contacted me about doing a review on pencil grips, I was like "Really? Pencil grips?" because either you need one or you don't, right? Or we'd buy them from the school store just so we could trade colors or collect the little rubbery ones with glitter in them. Apparently, no. The fact that I'm just learning this is a <i>little</i> embarrassing {please don't tell my OT!} but when you think about it, it makes sense. The pencil grip is just like any other teaching modification...use it as support when needed, then slowly back it off until it isn't necessary anymore.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lightbulb moment, you guys. Big time. Pass the sunglasses.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqQkx6ObotdwkMuhn2CCdKr9sm64Mx6EeBBM0tXwM6uuT1epzMwfIR2_Q3qiJJlpnoPLlLLTPamZMYEFE5tbIOJoKI-cMsPiK1_dqdt31qY3QIWLWelbZhmVL90BehOGgqw-2eFFu1bJrn/s400/blog3.jpg" width="400" /></span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.thepencilgrip.com/" target="_blank">The Pencil Grip, Inc.</a> offers multiple grips that offer different amounts of support. In my classroom, we worked from the 3 Step Training Kit, which is what I will review for you here. There is also a Jumbo Grip, which offers support up to the 2nd knuckle, a writing C.L.A.W. which actually gives each finger a specific pocket to fit into and those classic triangle grips we remember from school. Okay, plus also an assortment of funky, colorful grips in case you {<i>I mean</i>, <i>your students</i>} want to do a little trading on the playground.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The nice part about the 3 Step Training Kit is that if you know a child's grip isn't correct but you have no idea how to go about fixing it, you can work through each grip and see which has the best results for each individual student. You'd start with the green one on the left, the Crossover Grip. The wings on the sides keep the student's fingers from crossing over one another. This is an easy one to figure out by watching your students write. If their fingers lay on top of each other, this is the grip for them. Next you would move to the red one, the Pinch Grip, which helps stabilize that tripod grasp. This is one I can see using a lot in my classroom for students who need just a little bit of structure in knowing where to place their fingers. It gives them freedom in writing with just a little bit of support. The final grip is the blue one on the right, the Pencil Grip. This is another one I can seeing using frequently in the classroom because it still provides a little bit of control assistance but basically just makes writing more comfortable for all students. Maybe it would be an incentive for your students who just don't like to write or need help with stamina.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The only warning I'll give is to pay attention the R and L marked on the grips. I had a hard time knowing what meant at first...does it mean for right and left handed kids? Does it mean put that on the right or left side of the pencil? I had to check the website to find the answer but I did see the markings are actually helpful, once you know what it means. If your student is a righty, they put their thumb on the R. If the student is a lefty, they put their thumb on the L. Easy peasy. And awesome that the same grips can be used for all students.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

You guys. They also sent me a new product called Kwik Stix. Order them now. If you like crafts, order them now. If you hate crafts, order them now. They are so easy & clean {it's paint?!} & nice. Order them now.</div>

My first use was to trace my students' hands on a clipboard for one of the teacher assistants who helped cover me when I need to "go to a meeting" or "call a parent" {ie. pump for the baby in the library closet} twice a day. I traced their hands, any residue came off with a simple paper towel wipe, and they were done! I threw it in an organizer bag with a thank you note & a school mascot {make it personal} and they worked great. I knew it was a nice product. But I wanted to really test it out.<br />

<div>
Enter the 2 year old. :) One morning when <strike><i>she lost her TV privilege</i></strike>, er...she was bored...I decided to get the Kwik Stix out and see what mess she could make with them. She loves to color, paint, whatever and is obsessed with tracing her hand on things so if nothing else, I figured I could get some kind of Father's Day card of it. Immediately I was impressed with how well they glided and moved smoothly on the construction paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIdcVvWsTUesAs74xDQj7yJR3xw8Y5pbmQCdSwRDDfnuaL5AA0UROLOIpSn_QdpecIxFELGQ-1CojCN-pyLt-8iy1M7r7oDZjw5LRVipNH7SPsh4ilkGAbNU0isXJMtIURbAi8deIcy1GO/s1600/IMG_6434.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIdcVvWsTUesAs74xDQj7yJR3xw8Y5pbmQCdSwRDDfnuaL5AA0UROLOIpSn_QdpecIxFELGQ-1CojCN-pyLt-8iy1M7r7oDZjw5LRVipNH7SPsh4ilkGAbNU0isXJMtIURbAi8deIcy1GO/s320/IMG_6434.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She was able to pull the lids off with minimal struggle and switch out her colors easily. I noticed that the colors kind of layer on top of each other, so you don't end up with an entirely brown paper which is nice for those students who like to paint where they already painted and then paint another color on top of that again. We did a little color mixing experiment and blended a few together. There could be a really cool art lesson on primary and secondary colors in there! The Kwik Stix did get a bit of the other color on them but after a few marks on the paper, they were clean.</div>

<div>
The most amazing thing is how UNMESSY these things are! Even when she really went to town and colored over and over the same place, it never created a really wet spot or puddle. The box says it's dry in 90 seconds but for the most part it's dry much quicker than that. She freely flipped her paper back and forth to paint on both sides and we only had one little spot on her placemat where it was really layered on.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You'll notice that when I turned my back to check on the baby, she decided to paint her hand and see if she could make handprints on her own. You know, since 2 year olds with paint in their control have little to no patience for waiting on help. ;) She did make some prints & the clean up was still super easy. I took a baby wipe to her and it was done! Super easy clean up. Super. Easy.</div>

One of my coworkers was diagnosed with cancer, went into remission and was rediagnosed within the last two school years. She's a teacher, mom of two, and all around amazing woman. I tried to read this book from the perspective of her son and daughter who are in this situation. I admittedly put it off for a while because this topic can be scary and hard to breach. But when I finally got the courage to read it, I let out a sigh of relief because it was just...nice.<br />

<i>What Does Super Jonny do when Mom Gets Sick</i> by Simone Colwill starts by introducing Jonny as a superhero - what kid doesn't relate with that?! - with his sidekick bear, whose next mission is to help his mom. As the hospital staff is introduced to the reader, Jonny shares his superhero tools with them and they explain how their equipment is similar to the tools he uses. As the pages turn, the text and illustrations are both upbeat and simple in a way that is inviting instead of intimidating. While the illustrations are realistic {mom laying in bed, hooked up to an IV}, the hospital setting and staff are portrayed as friendly instead of scary. It teaches in a way that is basic enough for young readers but would also provide conversation starters for older children who may have questions for their parents but not know where to start. By the end, after Jonny has exhausted all of his ideas, he learns that he doesn't need to do anything super to help his mom feel better but be there for her. It's a sweet story about the power of a child's love that would be a great read for any child who is dealing with a sick parent. The story is also versatile in that it never depicts a specific illness or injury so it would be helpful for multiple situations.<br />
<br />
As a teacher, I love that Simone has included guide notes in the back. These would be helpful for parents reading this book to their own children or for teachers to use in the classroom. Often when one of our students goes through something traumatic {be it an illness, death, fire, or loss of any kind} we try as teachers to find a way to give enough information to the rest of the students that they can be sympathetic and understanding without going into any frightening details of what could be a very adult situation. This book's simplicity and guide notes in the back would be perfect to help teachers or social workers engage a student's classmates in a discussion of what their friend is going through and answer any tough - but real - questions they may have.<br />
<br />
The guide notes would also help get your students thinking about how to help others. So if there's a sick teacher, child or community member in your lives instead of a sick parent, it would still be a great jumping point to teach empathy. It would help your kids try to understand emotions from someone else's point of view as they brainstorm ways to help.<br />
<br />
If you are, or know someone who is, a sick parent there is also a great list of ideas of things that you can do as the parent to help your child go through the illness as well. Since Simone has Crohn's disease, this information comes from first-hand experience and is practical. It would be a great book for friends or parents who are in this unfortunate situation. You can get your copy from <a href="http://www.sickmom.org/" target="_blank">SickMom.org</a> or Amazon.<br />

Owww!!!Teaching all of these sounds is new to me. I taught short and long vowels in kindergarten and would do some often found spellings like double vowels, ing and the standard digraphs but our 1st grade curriculum has like 73 sound spellings to teach. What the what?! I can barely remember the difference between a digraph and a diphthong let alone all of the rules for when a consonant makes a soft sound. Whew! Thank goodness for Pinterest...a few of my own good ideas. ;)<br />
<br />
We taught the /ou/ & /ow/ spelling this week and I used these anchor charts from The Teacher Wife.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theteacherwife.blogspot.com/2011/03/clowning-around-teaching-ou-ow.html" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSquWRrWVErVtQ6KiMjp4OMVX9EDokUEk7CFEuaHGEx3XtiC7kcTyzGltn3FfdTJLexlI0awewXMzwEMUoYk58sFjylzLaccgs-7EDjUBTNbMCeBvEHpVJZ1bFeVdPuDEfSI_BHdpJfRU9/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-27+at+8.29.29+PM.png" height="152" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I wrote both spellings on band-aids and let the kids put them wherever they wanted. Warning: all day long, people will be saying to you "You hurt your head?! What happened? Oh no!" But hey, at least the kids will remember. And whoever said teaching meant <i>not</i> making a fool of yourself?<br />

I love letting my kids play in fun centers {blocks, legos, puppets and other things they don't usually get to play with} but sometimes I like to change it up. My kids like having a dance party with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=just+dance+kids" target="_blank">Just Dance Kids</a> on YouTube but new favorite is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5uIZ2KOZZeQDQo_Gsi_qbQ" target="_blank">Cosmic Yoga</a>!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5uIZ2KOZZeQDQo_Gsi_qbQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAH-qpB-cO1KGRjprTvxr3KYkPw-VIy44T_9L8PnJyGzD2sSW2NqB8xPiz9CJHWrj-D69napfQ59baYPVsX1bT9FiURfsV2M0ZI-2B4TfI0wvC-anVPUv_OM6XD5ls-tXO4QFPypCdL-oE/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-24+at+9.57.09+PM.png" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The girl on the videos is named Jamie and she is adorable. I mean, I'll listen to anyone with an accent, but she really makes the yoga fun. The backgrounds change and she takes the kids on an adventure every time. She goes to different countries, looking for different animals and teaching little tidbits as she goes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5uIZ2KOZZeQDQo_Gsi_qbQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCkEYis0IIYo3iPfJgelHgRd_Nzj6R62J0N5JoNLdJHsYlZzMWvzBimIhleJmTacKs39RJzp3KyWjgyO6lGpEwIIz5cjMYY5YUV-F_cJa1ouA0SlmJGh-3Uyfm6ZdwoccDUzdihFgafqe_/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-24+at+9.44.19+PM.png" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The videos last between 15-25 minutes so if I pick one for inside recess we usually still have time for a dance party or something more high energy afterward. But trust me, your kids will like this. Even the boys. Even the ones who won't dance. Even the ones who are too cool to have fun. They're mesmerized by her! It's too cute. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5uIZ2KOZZeQDQo_Gsi_qbQ" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgzHdkGD3fyw1EUgygCnB3m95hmcctSK-QzPd8exMUTnja6spUqNM8ekOoDmJieFWFJ62LiCGDRXwZHDl2iZq7h3PwmWft-T0u33XiL_WkokcMr77lw0TDPGNMVHSiihb8jzj6RVNcuQfY/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-24+at+9.45.59+PM.png" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you really get into it she has other little video clips, too. She posts a new yoga pose demonstration every week {although you don't really need to know anything because she demonstrates and explains everything well in her adventures}.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8snGkhBF7ngOr5E1RIsZI_vOrNg4Tq0i" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPtiraO3XVnq8jEgVeV9x_iniXt8pUq6mxPaeYvgrEj69ZvYFHNAYekV2NASI3Xr02ZSTd5HZ6RHoEmin16a_PdAggGaIAUoXJiqRNKIjUW_o-X0D7ZjqMk1JF11yishFpPIwFW_4i7M_/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-24+at+9.40.53+PM.png" height="245" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
She also posts little meditation videos. This one was about helping kids recognize and name their feelings as she talks to them about wanting to know what is inside a treasure chest and how the feelings change once she opens it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8snGkhBF7ngDp1oJtx5VcjwatxZn8xLK" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIeymk6g5rHv2l4hj3ugHu3BNGYxg6rGlFf-AyI16tqcJYlOU84LdiVga6KSKWY438Q1k00YEQuKHU0AF-_1zs6ZVep-LFyCvvsCLiHfrMH0O5HqmbveMTAsLXAuNgQypwTAeOWPW0O5Mj/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-24+at+9.42.55+PM.png" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>

I looooove the multicultural flesh crayons. We use them with every project. And we draw ourselves a lot in kindergarten! I've also posted before about how much I love the construction paper crayons that practically glow on even black paper. I am getting these for sure!</div>

I really like these big activity books for my students for a few different things. I've given them away as Christmas or End of the Year gifts before. I also like to have them on hand for the end of the year when the big kids are testing for days on end and we have to be quiet and stay in the classroom. Since the pages are oversized, they get to lay on the floor and color. They love it, it's somewhat quiet and they're busy in case you need to start taking anything down. ;) Princess for girls, Ninja Turtles for boys and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Bubble Guppies for your own littles at home. There are other options too. Check out the <a href="http://www.zulily.com/invite/kristin839" target="_blank">sale</a>!</div>

<br />
The first day we read Snowmen at Night & made an anchor chart about the elements of fiction stories. {they have illustrations, make-believe elements, a problem/solution, a beginning middle & end, characters and you read it just for fun}<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNN5TbpkQRqBc3alPXid5_GcxLD6ZrChB9YExdK7VTz-gVEKsFwdu7668NATbG7riEIV4Bz3F6uG3AyGy_pEr57-xeebLdq3PjGv7si5YaGzbP2CqvEfHW8bFnU0AO1-xh0lTO6lY3Qhhg/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-17+at+10.11.35+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNN5TbpkQRqBc3alPXid5_GcxLD6ZrChB9YExdK7VTz-gVEKsFwdu7668NATbG7riEIV4Bz3F6uG3AyGy_pEr57-xeebLdq3PjGv7si5YaGzbP2CqvEfHW8bFnU0AO1-xh0lTO6lY3Qhhg/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-17+at+10.11.35+PM.png" height="200" width="154" /></a></div>
<br />
The next day we read How To Make a Snowperson on <a href="http://www.readinga-z.com/books/leveled-books/book/?id=985" target="_blank">Reading A-Z</a> and made an anchor chart about the elements of non-fiction stories. {they have photographs, teach you something, don't have to be read in order, may have a table of contents, labels, etc}<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktcd7oSRU7zTWf7CEj37UUoDAoNX1hmy0OQHsGHoO_0-wiWM6UEMbltjKFNWYM9Zoj9KvVSSZjDqQfqhSGTgV3Rs26JwbNWOnCh49xyEoup_vqn9h2yzA8lZF8InpIqAj39HLnq30qtKd/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-17+at+10.13.06+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgktcd7oSRU7zTWf7CEj37UUoDAoNX1hmy0OQHsGHoO_0-wiWM6UEMbltjKFNWYM9Zoj9KvVSSZjDqQfqhSGTgV3Rs26JwbNWOnCh49xyEoup_vqn9h2yzA8lZF8InpIqAj39HLnq30qtKd/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-17+at+10.13.06+PM.png" height="123" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Then we wrote on snowballs to show what we learned! On the top snowball, they wrote to tell how they know that Snowmen at Night is fiction. On the bottom snowball, they wrote to tell how they know that How to Make a Snowperson is non-fiction. The middle snowball was optional and used as differentiation for students who finished quickly or I knew could be challenged with thinking on the next level. They wrote about whether they like to read fiction or non-fiction books in general, while providing a reason, of course.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35MTxtJBd8SXXLMqyl8Tgmsl8P1rARun4W4Q9f6cHiqUlFs79a2CnmbTMBId53NUJGaXwKBwaRNR_n1k1EJYD21VDYjtcet8hiocm5cXHkNmq5mFfNdRw_Nmq_gNHcbc7btk-ZZyie96I/s1600/snowman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35MTxtJBd8SXXLMqyl8Tgmsl8P1rARun4W4Q9f6cHiqUlFs79a2CnmbTMBId53NUJGaXwKBwaRNR_n1k1EJYD21VDYjtcet8hiocm5cXHkNmq5mFfNdRw_Nmq_gNHcbc7btk-ZZyie96I/s1600/snowman.jpg" height="320" width="198" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-1gEiyTrFDIwyQS-B6UL5HIbe3byv-rs95q8lxkxXM0QmemLMT4QR3U1bqh1DnSyjIEZHO3vikjAoPWkKSTNB177ke8dY_09084Ev2imcvPTqbhWLI1SFbHVDj0RNGOXHT3R9XpjVwlc/s1600/snowman2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-1gEiyTrFDIwyQS-B6UL5HIbe3byv-rs95q8lxkxXM0QmemLMT4QR3U1bqh1DnSyjIEZHO3vikjAoPWkKSTNB177ke8dY_09084Ev2imcvPTqbhWLI1SFbHVDj0RNGOXHT3R9XpjVwlc/s1600/snowman2.jpg" height="320" width="158" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I got out the scrap bucket of construction paper and let them go to town with hats, gloves, boots, arms, bows or whatever they wanted to create!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've beefed up my <a href="http://littlemissglamourgoestokindergarten.blogspot.com/2014/10/calendar-confessions-making-it-work.html" target="_blank">calendar</a> and am working in more counting, grouping and just thinking about what numbers mean. My 1st graders are able to count base 10 blocks in front of them but the wording of the standardized tests threw them {don't get me started} so I decided to have them dive in and look at grouping as much as possible. In the words of Mr. Wonka himself, we're going sideways, slantways, longways and backways with place value.<br />
<br />
One station was to take a Base 10 card and write the number. I got <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Base-10-Number-Set-free-254628" target="_blank">these</a> for free from TpT.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Base-10-Number-Set-free-254628" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoFjbVZLi0kpjjaoRXOMW3AgYccduBAiFYMowteWk4upRDetYSH0-XIEy1CMVr2EAYP9-WJvsF8vzz7W_jgTEDRQgokZAHKaojkSKfIczkVs8kXD6TX4lQ_zvRK6tQSKXvR1gNosJb0IxN/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-01-17+at+11.10.01+AM.png" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Another station was the reverse skill where they chose a number and had to build it. If they could figure out then tens and ones by looking at the number I let them do that. But the kids who still need some place value help had to count out the ones and then make groups of ten to trade in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_eoIz3mUGrsr7u6e2A5dr3XwSX48fDVH5BlVsc9J8AHFkp_UL8SXaqoGYLJEWfTNtOB5LEbkC-IZhUP-eqItKLmetP8UHAxi3iAvmLL46-jbM2onsEc-ZYw8X1VdIS4T3kjZ6_15IdaPp/s1600/IMG_5973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_eoIz3mUGrsr7u6e2A5dr3XwSX48fDVH5BlVsc9J8AHFkp_UL8SXaqoGYLJEWfTNtOB5LEbkC-IZhUP-eqItKLmetP8UHAxi3iAvmLL46-jbM2onsEc-ZYw8X1VdIS4T3kjZ6_15IdaPp/s1600/IMG_5973.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
A third similar, but still different, station was to choose a dot card, count the amount and build it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaRPN7T3B2t0vw5CE7h5IFK7tC0vt2bstk80NCLmX9NGvNiwIFS2VJyJZBqMWRXDy0WffLZVS_liKVL5P_Oub7hxVW66hyphenhyphen7aGFiuG7RTk-rtQUsYXhElVXW0Q_ShKgDaGUa8WegWFerodo/s1600/IMG_5974.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaRPN7T3B2t0vw5CE7h5IFK7tC0vt2bstk80NCLmX9NGvNiwIFS2VJyJZBqMWRXDy0WffLZVS_liKVL5P_Oub7hxVW66hyphenhyphen7aGFiuG7RTk-rtQUsYXhElVXW0Q_ShKgDaGUa8WegWFerodo/s1600/IMG_5974.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And then there was that group of little kinders that just. didn't. get it. I even made up a little jingle about trading for a 10 but hey, if you can't count to ten, it doesn't do much good to sing, am I right? :) So for these little babies, I made a workmat. And it made all the difference in the world!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B49Ez_FUuVcIZGZCYWxrS1Z0Rms&authuser=0" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMhmM6ScHLD9PLtY1AZOBYYhme9lno-8Y6Wq3nXH1kitvVVkcpNiSp2ZmyCQOmM4jWj_vE7IU_wJrI_cu9gFe3-nRLD0XpaRVjzM0yZtOFiqgFr-6_YFG7uPu61nNdKYQtbMZQuEPsG4li/s1600/base+10.jpg" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here we are, actually working through it as a group. I picked a number and we all counted it out as ones. Once we had the right amount, we filled up the ones on our workmat and pushed them over to the ten outline to double check that we had enough to trade in. After I checked, they traded their 10 ones by giving them to me and receiving a ten stick. Then they finished putting the rest of their ones on the workmat and we counted by adding on. {10...ll, 12, 13}<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSPGUb60bGLZWaMo4OLenyh8rwVuTjV2goXxiZ3SZf8HILbxd9WGtlYhswW1TOLwsPyj_8jRTS71jYnktdqVaO2RpXZ0kIP1bAvYdxCWz-ae_MxcFbG71npYD1A-EUr_ZUywu1Lx9xHEum/s1600/IMG_5962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSPGUb60bGLZWaMo4OLenyh8rwVuTjV2goXxiZ3SZf8HILbxd9WGtlYhswW1TOLwsPyj_8jRTS71jYnktdqVaO2RpXZ0kIP1bAvYdxCWz-ae_MxcFbG71npYD1A-EUr_ZUywu1Lx9xHEum/s1600/IMG_5962.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next day, they practiced without me {sshhhh...kind of} with these color coded baggies I made. They chose a bag practiced just counting one to one and knowing when there were enough to trade in for a 10 stick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGG9b4Vn8LzPXpVqeWFvyWtlFhfARRPXLe3pmW_2oB3Sv5A7NqYkz5aIRYBjKG2suXqVfgxW-loEK4oV0hhaXQUrbRhBLQ3hGS0khmkDuNq8s4aF-acLxrfNTyEFFJIB9QPAd8N5SB1lvQ/s1600/IMG_5869.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGG9b4Vn8LzPXpVqeWFvyWtlFhfARRPXLe3pmW_2oB3Sv5A7NqYkz5aIRYBjKG2suXqVfgxW-loEK4oV0hhaXQUrbRhBLQ3hGS0khmkDuNq8s4aF-acLxrfNTyEFFJIB9QPAd8N5SB1lvQ/s1600/IMG_5869.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You can download your free workmat by clicking the yellow picture above or this picture of it below. There are actually a few options. I preferred to have my ones all scattered but there is also a workmat with the ones in an array of two rows of five. Then both of those pages are also duplicated with a place for two 10s in case you want to be able to work on teen numbers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B49Ez_FUuVcIZGZCYWxrS1Z0Rms&authuser=0" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifCgWCq0T8nRb2yQSIabdR2Gw77Gnz0DGpFB3QbBbtkfCv66MOyH89DXg-xjv0D-uVMmxHM3zMt6IBjZeEDqizp5VjradKd4S11R28VgoddTEo8aMzGPU4DeLpezrrZCrT5vTjfSR81_gm/s1600/PicMonkey+Collage.jpg" height="327" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Let me know if these help you out! I have a feeling it'll be a regular tool in my room for a while. :) Happy trading in!<br />

As tight as my class is this year, everyone can use a reminder of how awesome they are, right adults? ;) So I read "The Crayon Box That Talked" and we talked about how each of us is unique just like the crayons. It was super fun this year because I have twins in my class. I held up 2 blue crayons that looked the same on the outside but when I colored with them, they were different shades of blue. The kids immediately pointed my twin girls out as those 2 colors. So cute.<br />
<br />
But instead of having the kids think about how themselves, I put everybody's name in a bowl and they picked one out. We talked about how fun it can be to have a secret and be able to surprise a friend so <i>most</i> of them made the long 24 hours without telling. We drew the names after reading the book but didn't write until the next day so they'd have plenty of time to watch their secret person and see what makes them really special. The next day, they revealed their secret friend and wrote about what makes them special.<br />

We used this as a class bonding activity but I'm going to keep them hanging up for a while because it goes along perfectly with Martin Luther King {and the spirit of getting along with everyone} as well as Valentine's Day and sharing the love.<br />
<br />
We just wrote on notebook paper but if you prefer to have an outline, I have two free downloads for you. One has a picture space and one is just lines. You don't have to do anything as a trade, just sharing the love!<br />

Whew! We survived. :) Let's celebrate with a <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2014/12/currently-january-20015.html" target="_blank">Farley</a> hook-up to kick 2015 off on the right foot.<br />

<br />
I keep up with Kardashians. So what? If you watch The Bachelor or Real Housewives, let me hear you. Everybody needs an hour to zone out, right? At least I know what fashion trends are coming before everyone else. ;)<br />
<br />
Thank you, Torani and <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/search.do?query=torani+sauce" target="_blank">World Market</a>. These flavored syrups are the bomb diggity. But not the clear ones. The bottles look like this and it's a little more saucy than liquify. For like $6 I had pumpkin spice coffee every day. Then peppermint bark coffee in December. Those were seasonal flavors but they always have chocolate, white chocolate and carmel. And some Starbucks deliciousness to your kitchen. They're also really good on ice cream. You're welcome.<br />

<br />
Does anyone else start testing the week back after a really long break?! Insane. But it is what it is. Let's do this. {maybe tomorrow}<br />
<br />
Little girl has some flu symptoms so I'm home from work today. I love having a day home with her, I just wish she was feeling like herself!<br />
<br />
I'm needing some perspective & an attitude adjustment. Can I just be super honest for a second? I loved being pregnant and husband said I was an awesome pregnant lady. Although I liked to stop for frozen yogurt whenever we out somewhere, I never actually sent him out to get me anything, I didn't have crazy mood swings, nothing. I was perfect. ;) Then after Little Glamour Baby was born, I had the normal hormonal spikes & dips but everyone said it was okay because I was hormonal and sleep deprived. Fast forward to her first birthday and I'm still moody and just don't feel like my happy self. Everyone said it was okay because hormones can take over a year to regulate because of breastfeeding, weaning, starting birth control, etc. {TMI? this is real life for a minute, ok?} Fast forward to a kick-in-the-pants <a href="http://mosaicchurch.tv/message/faith-todd-phelps/" target="_blank">message about listening to the right voice</a> as we start 2015 and I realized...it's not hormones or sleep deprivation, it's me using those as excuses. I've turned into a bit of a princess who expects things and then gets all snippy when they don't happen. Only treating the people badly who I love the most in life. That's annoying. And I don't like it. So it's time for a change. Peace out cynicism. I'm back.<br />
<br />
yes. More thinking of others before I speak or react. That is always a yes.<br />
<br />
maybe. Continuing to go through my closet to get rid of items I haven't worn in years. Instead of just dropping things off at Goodwill, I've started looking for organizations and places that help battered women get back on their feet or help single mothers try to make a better life for their babies. Not a total clothes evacuation, but a start.<br />
<br />
i wish. I love my job but I love staying home. I love my kids but I wish I could do more with the little one at home. I love looking for or creating new ideas at school but wish I could get more done around my house. It's a constant back-and-forth. Maybe Shark Tank can help me figure this out.<br />
<br />
Happy 2015 friends. Thanks for reading. I truly, truly mean it. xo<br />

The 1st quarter was busy. We just wrapped up a ginormous unit on urban and rural communities in the fall. It was a lot of work getting everything coordinated but I am so so happy to be back to teaching in integrated units. It just makes more sense to the kids when there's an overriding theme that everything is connected to - as opposed to remembering one thing for writing, then abruptly moving to math, then moving to another disconnected topic for science, etc.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh8A7kn6Eev52xTsgCqIzHpyD_pk9ymfXM48OjBhxdD6O9l1pMRjC8gsZty1qHJUjNoFdOY78oFEIp2UtZww9yVvXMDjHGGxnEXDlk3OWdeKMF1OyFZdD1w-5_1azB1UrBeeSBkmqdT1Oe/s1600/IMG_4437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh8A7kn6Eev52xTsgCqIzHpyD_pk9ymfXM48OjBhxdD6O9l1pMRjC8gsZty1qHJUjNoFdOY78oFEIp2UtZww9yVvXMDjHGGxnEXDlk3OWdeKMF1OyFZdD1w-5_1azB1UrBeeSBkmqdT1Oe/s1600/IMG_4437.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As we learned about urban and rural communities, we studied plants and animals in science. We focused mainly on life cycles and plant & animal needs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

How cute are these farm animal projects that the kindergarten teachers did?!<br />

In social studies we talked about why we need farms and how things from the farms are harvested to be made ready to go to the grocery store and eventually our houses. We also touched a little on wants and needs and how they're different in each community.<br />

We ended our unit with group research projects. The kids chose farm animals they wanted to learn about and we watched video clips and read non-fiction books to make notes in our notebooks. Then they chose their favorite fact to write a sentence and illustrate. I took videos of their presentations and hooked them up to Aurasma - our parents are going to flip out at Open House next week when they see our work come to life!! :)<br />

This is what she wants.Listen up boyfriends, husbands and parents searching for a gift for your favorite teacher. I have done the grunt work {ie. I am a wife, mother & teacher myself} and <b>this</b> is THE gift on her wish list. Before anyone accuses me of not understanding the meaning of Christmas, I completely believe in sharing love and giving to others, especially during the holiday season and I know it isn't all about gifts and getting. But raise your hand if you aren't expecting or hoping to get one single thing for the holidays. Anyone? Bueller? Ok then, let's go on.<br />
<br />
In true teacher fashion, let's start with a pre-test. If you are entertaining the idea of any of the following, please stay tuned. This post is for you.<br />
<br />
<b>coffee cups.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://gununkahvesi.com/image/66612678173" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqqUtlQQpyz5zXLhIyaKeAv-gAQpxodvLfTjhgazMhO2wY2_iqebepvFo2e7133BirfYTLDZhi4zUD14vCNbdLSk5vGES3S5CFIBgc9cBErJNNwg4HlCJT7Tnijg_MNmNilujBZdwjVMCQ/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-08+at+12.17.20+PM.png" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>no. our cabinets already look like this.</i></div>
</div>
<br />
<b>school supplies.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://whatsscrapping.blogspot.com/2011/08/back-to-school-supply-cake.html" imageanchor="1" target="_blank"><img alt="http://whatsscrapping.blogspot.com/2011/08/back-to-school-supply-cake.html" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPy9lxrh5Kl3vniQSeyJGq-u76TDJuaadmc0HjdDDB9QpdnjmbhAy78cWBr8p3969kszUl15MxpYXq7j0WxixWCKiiZeZvycXerz7WpYjA6q25f9-nM0cn9V-N2U0ajK0a4nJ6m9lDgPJI/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-08+at+12.21.09+PM.png" /></a></div>
<i>yes. that is adorable. but no, we don't want school supplies for the holidays or our birthdays. think about it - do you want a stapler, legal pad or another tie in your stocking? right. neither do we want glue sticks, pens or even books. that's why we invented teacher appreciation week.</i><br />
<br />
<b>personalized teacher gifts.</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.spoiledbutnotrotten.net/2014/04/new-deals-jane-personalized-teacher-appreciation-gifts-frozen-jewelry-chore-charts-superhero-leg-warmers-hair-accessories.html" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-Yile6Sm3r4IFaS34UozgKsZqGOiy2RWhzYPjfA_0SmnO__ozAV4pFGhlX3fA_E3Oy77jOsa4x5EXud4ZXK4o2NbFm1szSKQA3slES3SsSTe9B0fxRt3qtLUL7d5ISDSpTqS6CvOri8xv/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-08+at+12.25.16+PM.png" /></a></div>
<i>now husbands and boyfriends, I am talking to you. leave these classic teacher items for students to buy. they are cute and have a place in the classroom but unless you want your home to be overrun by other peoples' Pinterest projects, leave all school-related items to her school family.</i><br />
<br />
Let me introduce you to <a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" target="_blank">Erin Condren</a>. The master organizer. The queen of coordination. The maker of all happiness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdSbW49On9vUBZG8qTC_n8rR_I8WBmKu_gBPH7HLycQhoXknsGB5VLf2fHnIeowhoXIlhEcumJ2WmEknZagWZVpdwvZUzqKriiy3FaRlECn79d8so3UuU_tBie5uZq6LBJtndiegS-YiBy/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-10+at+8.17.37+PM.png" height="166" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
Okay, so maybe this isn't the end-all be-all of life. But you know how happy the lady in your life is when everything falls in to place. {and how stressed out she can be when things are unorganized, scattered and - gasp! - boring looking.}<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3pIQ3ZY1Iu9lBqHoIB2e4plbjP8iXUCou_Nkn-o_jc3V2e2v-b0BxnFipHgwoyB3Jl7OK2goJb0qndULNUr98WdaKbq0eHgfc0UUsWmj7ZLyqRgqbmfrIYMd_bQjPvHj_oCw88Ar0ONQE/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-11-08+at+12.27.48+PM.png" height="320" width="284" /></a></div>
<br />
These planners have made life SO easy. There is a lesson planning book available but I actually recommend the life planner instead. Each month has it's own 2 page spread. Each week has large boxes to write in daily must-do's as well as additional space around the sides and bottom to jot notes, reminders or doodles in staff meetings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilIm5fiZKr0ekE2t5hFJvgKSZiV3EaCyEX3M-7ufqWFZ-ra-Rrvf6tICwgvnImbc99_QPybFEfooJtK5tTzjGdBOulWveCuE_UOuPx6qY45ulJKuydqQhytaGS1mQfYTtr_BsscP_lkUQK/s1600/EC2.jpg" height="385" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fellas, let me ask you - wouldn't it be nice if she always remembered when your boys were playing in Monday Night Football? There's a space for that. What if she set aside time every week for a date night with you? There are color coordinated stickers to help her make you a priority.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLIpjwJpfuY2Cdn_rnJAsYlBw9dP6rx96RbUVbnivv6P1VLV0n_ORlf4souhzQEumxlnM6aYjkKrYMdP-EllA1c3n3w_BqWx5BIIwFd8nKB6tX2HK6XpCmiBfslrWiXSwOIEU80qQF82GD/s1600/EC3.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm sure that you are thinking "there are much cheaper calendars than this that would do the same thing." But you are wrong. These are personalized, filled with positive and inspiring quotes and will help your favorite lady feel relaxed, organized and in control.<br />
<br />
If you're just dating or need something on a smaller budget, it's okay. There are desk calendars, iPad covers, notepads and stickers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwof62GzaIssLUS0YIZwPEfTfntXsNiVG62b7Fbs35GFxNAot8_gqiOBoEam2J20SInYB53DQXp-MexYkoNJKsg8V5krR0WncpzhyphenhyphenyLNaOrg6nkhjdGC-zJx4VfAHsnfuOXIdHjYJREfGl/s1600/EC.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So what are you waiting on? No need to thank me. Just place your order and get ready to watch her face light up when she sees that you've read her mind. Get that one thing that she's always wanted but couldn't justify spending the money on. Those are the best gifts to get. Ever.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.erincondren.com/referral/invite/kristinyoung0726" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKiewVULXbiLKSbziBz9Wro39mSzoW6TAm2lT1gvs-SASO1SLK_emsxjABQnVZECyChaTqhE55UR5ZxHzbw2U0nu3mFfPC6C2wX7B3EMAdO0kKE-Fb5Pl_3v5hjzbiGd0jkO01ZbMUv-_r/s1600/IMG_3267.jpg" height="51" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And while you're at it, go ahead and spend that extra $5 to add an additional 6 months to her planner. Isn't it worth it to extend her happiness into the future? ;)<br />

It's really bad. Especially as a kindergarten teacher.<br />
<br />
I am awful at calendar. And because I'm awful at calendar, my students' number sense was lacking. Ugh. Major confession. Don't tell anyone.<br />
<br />
There just never seemed to be time to do calendar first thing in the morning {last year we went immediately into workshop and this year we have specials right away} so I always have to fit it into math. And I forget. Last year I was lucky to even get the date changed so one of my personal goals this year was to make my calendar better. I use this set that I put on magnets to keep on the dry erase board. You could also use these pieces with velcro dots on a bulletin board or in a pocket chart.<br />
<br />
So we do it in a routine...the same way every day. It's the only way to remember. We figure out the date and say it all together. We sing our Addam's Family Days of the Week song. We sing our Macarena Months of the Year song.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisX9D0bzBy1Or5mZ7HyY4BqfrRNVRG3-qQILqIyj70y8zbrQhzZxDpUeQ0sDh1uPALEi9xNf1ukxNglIy7cJlDrYd7Uh5ZFFk5EsxpSYmmZdLqrPvNskE5zHkHbDEYwxmbTXTy-_jcROrK/s1600/IMG_4426.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisX9D0bzBy1Or5mZ7HyY4BqfrRNVRG3-qQILqIyj70y8zbrQhzZxDpUeQ0sDh1uPALEi9xNf1ukxNglIy7cJlDrYd7Uh5ZFFk5EsxpSYmmZdLqrPvNskE5zHkHbDEYwxmbTXTy-_jcROrK/s1600/IMG_4426.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We look at yesterday's "___th day of school" number in the pocket chart and figure out what comes next. We check to see if it follows the patterns {starts the same as the other numbers in the row & ends the same as the other numbers in the column}.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp72YosXUCBq1tq9EBQdf5BN18ftUM87WmoPfbRia7j0nOCdiQN1xLCbVWcllpf3mZvPDsm-GR9WPHAc0WLAzeRWSAgF-rT-m2F_O23zeF1iM1AZrtmXF5MQvVm6-1bfkAODM3Vr3bDHWC/s1600/IMG_4418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp72YosXUCBq1tq9EBQdf5BN18ftUM87WmoPfbRia7j0nOCdiQN1xLCbVWcllpf3mZvPDsm-GR9WPHAc0WLAzeRWSAgF-rT-m2F_O23zeF1iM1AZrtmXF5MQvVm6-1bfkAODM3Vr3bDHWC/s1600/IMG_4418.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Then we use our number of the day to count by 5 with tallies. We whisper count until we get to the fifth slash number and we say those loud. Then we add sticks to the pocket chart and talk about place value. We add a dot to our ten frames and practice counting by 10s.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5npsA5PGMrGiFgiHXiiKbraMu3gU7t8e3OMie1GX6MM2QujE1rZSU2ZNQIHQIDrsi4Lg2vT3yC2MYRa4V1hiOAwl6kEMWldoWeDAwQelflGhWrF3_y1PCXlGj1zdNkgKL1vQNtI5X6yY/s1600/IMG_4419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5npsA5PGMrGiFgiHXiiKbraMu3gU7t8e3OMie1GX6MM2QujE1rZSU2ZNQIHQIDrsi4Lg2vT3yC2MYRa4V1hiOAwl6kEMWldoWeDAwQelflGhWrF3_y1PCXlGj1zdNkgKL1vQNtI5X6yY/s1600/IMG_4419.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Then we figure out yesterday, today and tomorrow while the meteorologist checks the weather. We color in our weather <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Calendar-Companion-K-2-Printables-to-Supplement-Your-Daily-Calendar-142544" target="_blank">graph</a> {by Cara Carroll}, hang our weather photo and sing the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrRWUhQjHjk" target="_blank">weather song</a>.<br />
<br />
Whew! Then it's time for lunch!!! :)<br />
<br />
I'm feeling fairly confident that we're going to know our two-digit numbers this year!! Woo-hoo! :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You've probably seen those number anchor charts on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/kristinyoung/math/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>. I LOVE them. I thought there was no way under the starry heavens that <i>my</i> kids would actually be able to make them. Yes, I have half 1st graders this year which makes a big difference but I also have half ESL students. And it's still basically the beginning of the year. {I feel like this until Valentine's Day.}</div>
<br />
But I tried it. On a day when the Superintendent was visiting. And was supposed to specifically visit my classroom. Ha! Sometimes I even amaze myself with my crazy antics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After lots of modeling, though, it worked beautifully! My kids worked cooperatively. They counted accurately. The superintendent never made it to my room - remember, my luck is that <a href="http://littlemissglamourgoestokindergarten.blogspot.com/2014/09/dont-get-caught-on-pinterest.html" target="_blank">I'm only visited while on Pinterest</a> ;) - but these anchor charts are lovely and I encourage you to make them for your own classroom! I have them hanging in my room because my kids still refer back to them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
In my hunt for number sense activities I also found <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Nifty-Numbers-to-10-Part-2-1324526" target="_blank">this packet</a> by Vickie Plant. {I love her.} These number mats are just part of the awesome packet. I used them as a scavenger hunt. I passed out all of the representation cards {tallies, fingers, ten frames, shapes, number words, dice, dominoes} and put the number mats on different tables in the room. The kids had to figure out their amount then find the number mat it belonged in.<br />

I love fall. And not just because of pumpkin spice lattes. Because I've only had two. I love apples, leaves, pumpkins, cake, Thanksgiving, the smells of it, the weather...everything. {I'm not sure how cake ended up in there but hey, let's go with it.}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My K-1 teammate and I are doing an entire integrated unit of all things fall as we compare urban and rural communities. Starting with apples...in every content area. That's right! All. the. subjects.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found these awesome apple workmats from <a href="http://lifeovercs.com/free-adding-to-10-apple-tree/" target="_blank">Life Over C's</a>. We used them a few days, just practicing making number sentences and adding numbers together with "apples" {pom poms} on the workmats. They recorded their number sentences which helped me know who was getting it and who wasn't.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPGmMny3Va3c1RiD6x4kG4NIWFqy1zLXFzzlgMHqXhZFpXixhJTjL95j3LiYqNhY2mZ4I5l4WKn2f7i6o_kqNxtc2giBeQdnc_zqqCF0X8FkguHs-0mSXnLqAIepykZmXz7vXZvrWEBMYf/s1600/apple1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPGmMny3Va3c1RiD6x4kG4NIWFqy1zLXFzzlgMHqXhZFpXixhJTjL95j3LiYqNhY2mZ4I5l4WKn2f7i6o_kqNxtc2giBeQdnc_zqqCF0X8FkguHs-0mSXnLqAIepykZmXz7vXZvrWEBMYf/s1600/apple1.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After practicing, I gave them a number sentence to glue down. They had to tell me the answer before finding the basket with the answer on it. Then they finger painted apples to show the amounts. For the kinders who struggled with adding {the few that haven't mastered number ID or rote counting} I gave them a mat without the number sentence. I just chose two numbers that I knew they needed to work on and they practiced counting the amount on individual trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuAqUKNG4t6_PTzo8qmOe9lWRHDFxEHa09n02ciauJc7Ic9RgPqjTQhN6BweKSBa3av-zToIAtS6A-DqUC1VBcSOP3fY6KN70Uz645uAQsiA4EoVyK-GLXB__smLeK0ce0tTPcaTvE-E9Y/s1600/apple2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuAqUKNG4t6_PTzo8qmOe9lWRHDFxEHa09n02ciauJc7Ic9RgPqjTQhN6BweKSBa3av-zToIAtS6A-DqUC1VBcSOP3fY6KN70Uz645uAQsiA4EoVyK-GLXB__smLeK0ce0tTPcaTvE-E9Y/s1600/apple2.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I also used 10 Apples Up on Top for our math mentor text. Since one of the 1st grade Common Core objectives is to order 3 numbers or amounts from least to greatest, we used this cute math activity from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ten-Apples-Up-On-Top-Language-Art-and-Math-Packet-315614" target="_blank">Kindergarten at Heart</a> but added two more friends to help balance the apples. We gave the students 3 number cards {<a href="http://www.sbschools.org/schools/bc/class_pages/first_grade/docs/NumberCards.pdf" target="_blank">primary number cards</a> from the Investigations curriculum} for the kids to order. Then they made fingerprint apples to represent the amounts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHMi3xZLjKrC1U8t9mDdiLk2_A4I-eoIOxGISxwruNRwJa4LY30pNac-JJE3GJsOnAovyXtq_rzQzUUyHGPPp_dzyvkIWSm1cTajgRIY4qu8VhU-JJf26-4UU_dtYpK8dF2XywGSyDwAR/s1600/apple3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLHMi3xZLjKrC1U8t9mDdiLk2_A4I-eoIOxGISxwruNRwJa4LY30pNac-JJE3GJsOnAovyXtq_rzQzUUyHGPPp_dzyvkIWSm1cTajgRIY4qu8VhU-JJf26-4UU_dtYpK8dF2XywGSyDwAR/s1600/apple3.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For a non-math idea, I've started poetry notebooks this year and am so excited about it! Like I said...apple everything...so an apple poem. Obvi. I got this one for free from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Apple-Poems-2-Freebies-332092" target="_blank">What's the Buzz in First</a>. I'm going to make these much more interactive as we go on but for now, we're keeping it simple. Read the poem {maybe add some hand motions if it's long or complicated}, highlight sight words {or letters, depending on ability}, illustrate it, practice reading it in all kinds of voices and then do something fun with the content. Our fun project this week was the apple finger painting. We'll also be sampling some apple products next week.<br />

You good teacher, you. ;)<br />
<br />
I've always thought of Brown Bear as a pre-K or early kindergarten story because of it's simplicity. But I used it with my K-1 class this year and the simplicity and repetition lead to some awesome skill mastery and understanding.<br />
<br />
<b>I see {sequencing} looking at me.</b><br />
<br />
One of my goals this year is to work in more fine motor activities using scissors and glue...which will in turn work in creativity & art! So for our retell activity, my students colored pictures, cut them out & glued them in order to sequence the story. If they finished early, they labeled the different animals. Of course, I forgot to take a picture of any of my dolls <i>wearing</i> their crowns but this is how they looked.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>I see {writing} looking at me.</b><br />
<br />
I. love. these. books! <a href="http://teachertothecore.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Teacher to the Core</a> must've created these just for me because there's a <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Brown-Bear-Student-Book-for-Kinder-223851" target="_blank">kindergarten</a> version <i>and</i> a <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Brown-Bear-Book-First-Grader-First-Grader-What-do-you-see-217507" target="_blank">1st grade</a> version! My 1st graders created their own circle stories, writing their name on the first page then continuing the story by carrying over whatever they saw to the next page. The number of pages depended on fast they worked but each student started with 3 and added from there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My kindergarteners created a group book together. We used the kindergartener page each time to minimize the sounding out frustration and only asking them to sound out one word per page.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo-RfRwETs3CYbnI77nOz8s8jHNabbjVCSHWzPn14ZNonCGSOVx8SW-sYQYfoDgn2xt40sROz0FB5GyG9O469FnfpQNu8TpbKMBJ2Lcmx2O7B5VPWhxH168z3aaXf64Z5CNjOHM2sWXxub/s1600/IMG_3719.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo-RfRwETs3CYbnI77nOz8s8jHNabbjVCSHWzPn14ZNonCGSOVx8SW-sYQYfoDgn2xt40sROz0FB5GyG9O469FnfpQNu8TpbKMBJ2Lcmx2O7B5VPWhxH168z3aaXf64Z5CNjOHM2sWXxub/s1600/IMG_3719.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
He saw a coconut tree. Hmmm...can you guess which book we used last week?! ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>I see {math} looking at me.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose this math activity because it takes the typical graphing activity to the next level. I gave my students M&Ms to represent the colors of six of the animals. {The white horse & black sheep are missing but no one seemed to mind since they were working with candy.} The students sorted their M&Ms by color and graphed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigbFcSd0oBhSpDbwHv1l0G0xknVV26CHvvHEguwVZCn2u8yJb2-ZB8aNvfpHrQ05WkKqZeRhRrIMlS7t9-IWJoxydrZMEuQRZsc-yOqdzJler3MehvXJs2m-I20D0BQG6QCM2FvfeKHACp/s1600/IMG_3714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigbFcSd0oBhSpDbwHv1l0G0xknVV26CHvvHEguwVZCn2u8yJb2-ZB8aNvfpHrQ05WkKqZeRhRrIMlS7t9-IWJoxydrZMEuQRZsc-yOqdzJler3MehvXJs2m-I20D0BQG6QCM2FvfeKHACp/s1600/IMG_3714.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
But then <a href="http://happyteacherhappykids.com/free-brown-bear-activities-for-back-to-school-in-kindergarten/" target="_blank">Happy Teacher, Happy Kids</a> extended the math practice with this addition sheet that was amaze balls!<br />
<br />
{can I say amazeballs?? I hope so because I just did...twice.}<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This activity is actually 4 pages in total with a sorting page, graphing page, recording page and the addition page. Best news: it's a free download. Actually, <b>everything</b> in this post is a free download! Just click the pictures or linked text to go to the original store or blog to grab your copy.</div>

In fact, I love it. I have a lot of school boards and about a-bazillion pins for every fun thing I find. {You might want to <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/kristinyoung/" target="_blank">follow me</a>, I'm just saying.} But you probably shouldn't be on Pinterest at school.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While your kids are in the room.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And your principal comes in for an observation.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thaaaaat's right. That was my afternoon. But wait - let me explain!!! You know how you pre-pre-prepare everything to be organized and productive? Right, I did that. I introduced Homework Notebooks to my students today but instead of passing them out one at a time, I put them in my kids' communication binders myself this morning. All 19 of them. The plan was for them to pull out their binders {like every day at dismissal} and they would flip to the back to see their Homework Notebooks, be thrilled that I had secretly already added them and we would move on without taking up too much time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But did that happen?! Nooooo. Instead, my students pulled out their binders and every. single. homework. notebook. went. flying.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
AT. THE. SAME. TIME.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There were notebooks all over the floor. <i>"Whose is this?!" "Where's my journal?" "I don't want this color!" "I want that one!" "That's mine!" "You're stepping on it!!" </i> And then some. In the words of Pete the Cat...did the teacher cry? Goodness no! I had it under control!! I was a little frustrated but I sent them to their tables to work on our usual packing up procedure while I took a deep breath & tried to calm my frazzled nerves. {Did I mention this was the end of a day where my kids don't go to specials? ie. I had no break.}</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I went to the computer. I knew if I googled Homework Notebook or Homework Journal or Homework Binder that something would pop up. And it did! The problem was...it took a few minutes {read: 90 seconds} to find. And in that 90 seconds, what happened? You got it. Enter the principal.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Did the teacher cry? <strike>Almost.</strike> Goodness no!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I turned red & sputtered an explanation of what was going on. Luckily she moved on and said she'd come back later, but still. It happened. And it was not fun. Why am I telling you? Because I don't want the same thing to happen to you. Here are some links to some of the FREE journal covers that I use. Download them now & be ready!</div>

Especially with kindergarteners. Even though I check and double check and quadruple check how they're going home, there are always a few parents that I just can't reach or an 8 that could be a 3 when they write their child's bus number.<br />
<br />
For the first day {okay, the 1st week} I hold my breath anytime there's an announcement after school. <i>Please don't say my name, please don't say my name, please don't say my name...whew! Why am I sweating?!</i> But I've noticed a pattern - it's after those first few weeks that we start to relax and that's when simple mistakes can happen, regardless of how cute and Pinteresting your transportation chart is.<br />
<br />
Enter good old fashioned masking tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5AJ8z7-56lOmsn_kpM8V_e0E_TFjbMdqQPB9sbnQjJZ50LLjIph3_TaC4BnshvDlwlRuaJz8z-1UZ-297vZPVs434nj1JobDAi736KdqdnQonNPtZ7zaYZJPHohcMMIw1f0OZFlz4oQ7u/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-09-20+at+11.21.15+AM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5AJ8z7-56lOmsn_kpM8V_e0E_TFjbMdqQPB9sbnQjJZ50LLjIph3_TaC4BnshvDlwlRuaJz8z-1UZ-297vZPVs434nj1JobDAi736KdqdnQonNPtZ7zaYZJPHohcMMIw1f0OZFlz4oQ7u/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-09-20+at+11.21.15+AM.jpg" height="400" width="331" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
How brilliant is that?! When your kids put their backpacks on, you can see all of their numbers in one quick glance down the line. We teach kids their bus slots (where they park on the lot) because sometimes busses break down & they have to send a replacement. If your kids don't ride the bus, just write <i>walk</i> or <i>van</i> or <i>AS</i> (after school).<br />
<br />
It doesn't mess up the backpacks so parents aren't upset. It's super easy to change if they start going home a different way. The kids don't play with them so they stay on for a long time AND it makes dismissal basically fool proof. If your sub can't find your bus list, you're covered. If you have to leave early & have another teacher take your kids to the bus, you're covered. If you're just having one of those days where your mind can't form um...what are those things...oh, <b>words</b>...yeah, you're still covered!<br />
<br />
So grab some masking tape and sharpie and don't lose your kids. Because that probably wouldn't reflect well on your evaluation. ;)<br />

I am going to teach a K-1 combo class this year with students from both grades in my classroom. I'm going to teach both K & 1st grade curriculums. I'll also be working with a group of ESL students like I did a few years ago. And that's pretty much all that I know. :) There will be a lot of trial & error this year and probably some confusion but I'm also excited for some challenges and something new.<br />
<br />
Most of all, I am hopeful that I will have a lot more to share with you. It was hard to post last year due to a few, let's say...obstacles.<br />
<br />
*I was trying to balance being mommy & teacher for the first time.<br />
*I didn't want to mess up my manicure by typing.<br />
*My feet grew during pregnancy & all of my free time was spent buying shoes.<br />
*I didn't have much freedom to be creative in my lesson planning.<br />
*My false eyelash glue was defective & the computer screen looked blurry.<br />
<br />
Ok, so really only two of those are true. But I'll let you work that out on your own. ;) Thanks for coming back, reading & learning with me. Let's have some fun this year and come up with new and exciting things for our kids...what do you say?!<br />

<br />
They're fun to read.<br />
The kids pick up on the patterns & start to predict what comes next.<br />
They teach letters & sound with alliteration and picture clues.<br />
They're perfect to start a lesson when you want a spin off activity.<br />
There are so so many out there...and now there's one more! :)<br />
<br />
How adorable is this alphabet book called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/My-Doctor-ABC-Stephanie-Cox/dp/149291908X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407771058&sr=1-1" target="_blank">My Doctor and Me ABC</a>?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/My-Doctor-ABC-Stephanie-Cox/dp/149291908X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407771058&sr=1-1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_l6qjB77uIKx2yH8Ls4sfgrMgt3GmW11enSGMTT-3d0bNovi-VT5jECjTuGTYJK-wTQT_-OT8FLZ_Mko-jWJlAc25L_n9WW67IyJEywCLL5rtxpQhqs9OnfvMoLYNv3gDB-MWaMj7L-Rb/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-08-11+at+11.11.36+AM.png" height="400" width="395" /></a></div>
<br />
The author, Stephanie Cox, is a doctor herself. Plus, her daughter was in kindergarten last year so she knows exactly what our target audience {ie. the littles at your feet} need to know. The book cleverly works in eating well & exercise as well making healthy choices like getting enough sleep and wearing sunscreen. Look at these cute illustrations!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/My-Doctor-ABC-Stephanie-Cox/dp/149291908X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407771058&sr=1-1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqyqgeQPeAHnopbVbMGW3nVJxqgSrtncT9HNFV__4ax3vslrbUnsT5mBKRyaIRZqnZDHZxFp15nv-bfnNoNVR56gNrOC9MSqbZKzhjVTy30JAy_oLhbcehtuz5Ay8nEou3CU4gkJXh4yJY/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-08-11+at+11.12.09+AM.png" height="400" width="387" /></a></div>
<br />
I plan to use this book multiple times throughout the year. As I'm introducing the alphabet to my kindergarten students, it'll work perfectly with my other ABC books. But we're <b>all</b> teaching a health unit, at least informally {wash your hands, cover your mouth, don't eat that}, and you can totally pull this back out again to highlight different lessons. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/My-Doctor-ABC-Stephanie-Cox/dp/149291908X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407771058&sr=1-1" target="_blank">My Doctor and Me ABC</a> is great for teaching vocabulary, easing fears of children who are nervous to visit the doctor and just giving kids an overview of what they'll be experiencing as they get their regular checkups.<br />
<br />
